The Happiness Hour
Wednesdays at 7:30 P.M. (CENTRAL TIME)
Why do some images draw you in while others you simply scroll past in your Instagram feed? Telling a “story” through thousands of pixels provides you an opportunity to set yourself apart from the millions of other people that used their camera today. No matter what the subject, photography has a way of connecting people whether they speak the same language or not.
Thanks to Covid-19, my city, Austin, Texas implemented a plan for “shelter-in place.” I quickly realized that my in-person socializing would come to a screeching halt and Zoom was quickly becoming my favorite verb. Within a few days, I was “zooming” with friends and I planned a virtual photography meetup. I reached out to friends and invited them to step away from their personal chaos and visit with other entrepreneurs and creatives. On April 1, 2020, the doors to The Happiness Hour were opened and some amazing speakers are on the schedule to help you Connect. Inspire. and Create.
I look forward to seeing you.

These poems enhance the visual experience.
Don is often asked what he thinks about a photograph from some of his students. He almost always asks them “tell me a little bit about what you were thinking or feeling when you clicked the shutter. Does this photo capture those feelings?” This begins the process of creating poetry both in verse and photographic elements. We will explore different styles to allow this story to unfold.

Planning to shoot an eclipse in 1 minute, 10 minutes, or 100 minutes with Brad Smith
Brad Smith is a cityscape photographer in Dallas, Texas. One of his growing subject quirks over the last 6 years has been precision photo and timelapse alignments of the full moon. The tools he's gathered over the last 72 lunar cycles have also been surprisingly relevant for eclipses. He's shot 3 total lunar eclipses, one partial solar eclipse, and one annular solar eclipse along the way. Looking toward April 8, if you're near the path of totality for the total solar eclipse and want extra thoughts about how to shoot it for yourself, this talk is for you.
There's so much information already out there about the basics that you may already be bogged down by it. Brad is aiming to tackle the rest of it: where internet consensus is wrong (or misguided), what's important and what's not, avoiding calamity, strategies for your own setup, and advanced concepts if you want to nerd out about it.
The main idea will be: if you want to sleep until your alarm goes off 1 minute before totality, he wants you to feel equipped to open your front door and make a photo worth having. And with a little bit more effort and forethought, to collect a set of photos that will bring you back to the memory of being there. Or if you want to maximize everything, leave nothing to chance (but the weather), and make something historic out of it - Brad wants you to have a path to make that possible too.

Do you love nature photography but feel like you can’t take good nature photographs because you don’t live near mountains, or oceans, or the desert? Or that you don’t have the right camera, or enough lenses? Those lists can go on and on, and can prevent us from seeing and enjoying the beauty that surrounds us, wherever we happen to live.
Christine Dewey is a nature photographer based in Illinois. Part of her journey as a photographer included a 365 project - taking, editing and posting a photo each day for 365 days in a row. During that year she learned to look more closely at the world around me and to find beauty in places that I had normally overlooked. Christine will talk about that journey and where it led her. She will also discuss the use of (and her love for!) Lensbaby lenses, and teach you how to look more closely using a technique called reverse freelensing.
Christine will discuss the joys of black and white photography, abstracts, and using intentional camera movement too. She will share information about where to learn more about all of those, but above all, she hopes to inspire you to find beauty and joy in the world around you wherever you happen to be.

At first glance, the land seems sterile, yet close examination reveals a variety of photo opportunities. Agile bighorn sheep scale steep canyon walls. Pronghorn and bison graze on nutritious prairie grasses. The ever-so-cute black tailed prairie dog never fails to entertain. Lighting in the Badlands during magic hour can cast a warm glow across the landscape. “Shooting Local - Unveiling Things Hidden in Plain Sight” with Mark Goeman
Texas-based landscape photographer, Mark Goeman shares his perspective on “shooting local.”
Photography can be about unveiling things we encounter daily and often take for granted. Many times we don’t realize the beauty of where we live until it’s gone. Vintage signs that point back to a simpler time, the classic old home or building that may be torn down to make room for a modern strip center or multi-story office complex, or simply the natural landscapes found in nearby parks, by creeks, lakes, rivers, and the surrounding countryside.
Beauty is all around us, sometimes it just takes seeing things from the right perspective. Focus on where you live in a different way, through the eyes of a photographer.

During this session, Shari explains how she uses the app to plan for her night photography far in advance of a trip or during daytime scouting in the field.
Points of discussion include; using PhotoPills to understand the orientation of the galactic core of the Milky Way; finding the timing, position, and phase of the moon; saving and sharing a “plan”; planning with PhotoPills’ augmented reality tool; creating equivalent exposures, and more. To get the most of out of this session, participants should have the PhotoPills app downloaded onto their smart phone or tablet.

Paul Malinowski, a serious hobbyist photographer, has successfully entered about 50 juried photo competitions since 2015. We will cover how to select a photo competition that is right for you, how to decide which images to submit and many other tips that will crack the code of photo competitions. We will close with applying to a competition in real time!

“And, Now For Something Completely Different” with Chris Fitch
When we do the same things, the same way, (what we like and what we do well) we can get “stuck in a rut”, lose our creative spark, or miss shots because our normal settings/approaches don’t work. Creative ruts can happen for several reasons. In many cases, it comes from a place of comfort. Once you discover a photography style you like, it’s easy to stick to taking the same kind of shot each time you go out.
Skills are like muscles — you need to flex them regularly, or you'd suffer from atrophy. Even when we are comfortable using a camera or “getting the shot,” it’s always healthy to learn and add to our experience. Let’s explore some practical ways we can get “out of the box” and expand our photographic vision.
